Virginia Driver Improvement Program
The Virginia Driver Improvement Program is an 8-hour DMV-approved classroom course available for DMV-ordered, court-ordered, insurance-required, or voluntary enrollment. The course may be used to reduce demerit points, satisfy legal requirements, or support insurance premium reduction, depending on provider approval.
Drivers directed by the Virginia DMV must complete the course within 90 days to avoid license suspension. Drivers under age 20 are required to attend a classroom-based course and are not eligible for online options.
Successful completion may award up to five safe driving points once every 2 years, with a maximum balance of five points. When court-ordered, the court determines whether points are awarded.
